Afterword started with a group of friends and a very simple ritual: one book, once a month.

Some months we read literary fiction. Some months history. Sometimes a classic we'd been pretending to have read for years.

But the best part was never finishing the book.

It was deciding what to read next.

Someone would always say:

• “I want something like this, but darker.”
• “I want to understand this period better.”
• “I haven't read a classic in years.”
• “I just want something I can't put down.”

Afterword grew out of those conversations.
